Assignment 2

 Planning websites through thoughtful analysis.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Planning guidelines

Case Study Background

The BoatVentures website was recently launched and its attractive yet simple design has impressed many other charter boat operators. In particular, Sully McShannon is quite taken with the website and wants a website of his own for his fishing charter operation. Sully runs fishing charters out of Falmouth on Cape Cod for most of the year, although the actual season is from June to October. He spends the winter months fishing for cod for commercial operations and restaurants, but wants a website to help him attract more charter customers; the tips and charter income is much more lucrative than commercial fishing.

Sully has approached you to design a website for his charter business. He currently does not have a website but several of his competitors in Falmouth do. He doesn't want to duplicate their designs -- he wants something simple, fresh, new, and exciting. He does not just want an online brochure.

Tasks

Your tasks are to:
  • plan how you would understand Sully's needs; how would you find out what his website needs
  • identify the users/visitors of the website (at least two)
  • identify at least five use cases and document the main content needs of users based on the use cases
  • plan the content structure, e.g., graphics, media, pages, copy, to support the use cases
  • outline the page/website flow for the pages you need to support the use cases
  • prototype/wireframe at least two web pages including the main landing page (home page)

What to Submit

You must submit your design proposal for Sully's Fishing Charters as a PDF via Canvas. The PDF must be based on the Word template provided. As an alternative, you may reproduce (as close as appropriate) the template in Google Docs. In that case, you may submit either a PDF or a link to a shared version of the online document.
